MONTEFIORALLE
The Hamlet of Montefioralle
The castle of Montefioralle (originally Monteficalle) is located in an area that doesn’t lack testimonies of roman life.
The origins of the castle go back to the year 931. During his trip from Cluny to Rome, the German monk Tanchelmo, founded a fortified monastery, in german military style, on top of the hill of Montefioralle. The castle is mentioned in a document of the year 1085 for the first time.
During the years it belonged to the families: Ricasoli, Benci, Gherardini and Buondelmonti. In 1325 Castruccio Castracani conquered the fortified abbey and modified the architecture. He reinforced the first protecting belt with a second wall and increased the number of towers.
Afterwords the castle went under the control of Florence, then of Siena and then definitely again under the control of Florence. Montefioralle played a significant policy role for a long time. It quarted the seat of the administration and the hospital of Santa Maria del Bigallo. It administered and controlled the surrounding territory for a long time.
The Wine of Montefioralle
The vineyards and the cellar of the winery are located on the southern slopes, close to the new parking area from which you can walk up to montefioralle in less than 2 minutes. The property is right above ‘fonte vecchia’ the old roman stone well.

The shop where we sell our produce directly is located at n.45 on the main street of the small hamlet instead. You may book a guided visit of the vineyard with wine-tasting at the wine shop. For further information regarding those services visit the 'wine-tasting' section.
